Duolingo English Test in Nepal: Fees, Format, Registration & Preparation Guide (2026)

For Nepali students preparing to study overseas, the Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency exam that can be taken from home. It measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking in an adaptive test and provides a certified result that can be shared with institutions.

The DET may suit students who want a flexible test date, a short test process, and online delivery. However, acceptance is never automatic. English Before paying for any test, confirm that your exact university, course, campus, and intake accept the DET and check whether they require an overall score, minimum subscores, or another test for visa purposes.

The official DET website describes the process as approximately one hour and says results are available in two days. The test is computer-adaptive, so the difficulty and number of some questions can change according to your performance and the grading engine’s confidence.

How much does the DET cost in Nepal?

The current official price is USD 70 for one test. The amount charged in Nepal can differ from a simple rupee conversion because of the exchange rate used by your bank or card provider, international transaction fees, taxes, and other payment charges. Treat any NPR figure as an estimate rather than a fixed local price.

Before purchasing, check:

1      Your card or payment method is enabled for international online transactions.

2      The name on your DET account matches your government ID.

3      Your target institutions accept the DET for your intended course and intake.

4      You have enough time to test, receive results, and retake if your plan allows it.

5      You understand that a test credit is valid for 21 days from purchase.

The official rules also state that a test taker may purchase up to three tests in a 30-day period. That does not guarantee that a retake will be useful, so use practice results and your application deadline to plan carefully.

What is the current DET format?

The test takes about one hour and has three broad stages:

1. Introduction and onboarding

You check your computer, submit your ID, set up your phone camera to record the computer, and review the rules.

2. Adaptive test

This is the scored portion. Question types include Read and Select, Fill in the Blanks, Read and Complete, Listen and Type, Interactive Reading, Interactive Listening, Write About the Photo, Interactive Writing, Speak About the Photo, Read, Then Speak, and Interactive Speaking.

3. Writing and speaking samples

You respond to one writing prompt and one speaking prompt. These samples are not reported as a separate overall score in the same way as the adaptive assessment, but the official guidance says they may be shared with institutions receiving your results. Take them seriously and answer naturally within the instructions.

The exact number of questions varies because the assessment is adaptive. You should practise the task types rather than trying to memorise a fixed paper.

How is the DET scored?

Certified DET scores are reported on a 10–160 scale. In addition to the overall score, you receive individual subscores for speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Integrated subscores are also reported:

•       Production: writing plus speaking

•       Literacy: reading plus writing

•       Comprehension: listening plus reading

•       Conversation: speaking plus listening

There is no universal “required DET score.” A university might set an overall minimum, a minimum in one or more subscores, or different standards for undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, or pathway programs. Always read the English-language requirement for the exact course and intake rather than relying on a general university page or a social-media score chart.

Is the DET accepted by universities?

The DET is accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide, but the list can change. Use the official DET accepting-institutions directory as a starting point, then open the institution’s own admissions page. Confirm all of the following:

•       the exact institution and campus;

•       your program or department;

•       your study level;

•       your intake or application cycle;

•       the minimum overall score;

•       minimum subscores or band-equivalent conditions; and

•       whether the result is accepted for your application route.

University admission acceptance and immigration requirements are separate questions. A university’s acceptance of the DET does not automatically mean that the score satisfies a visa, permit, professional-registration, or scholarship requirement. Ask the institution and consult the relevant official immigration guidance for your destination.

How to register and take the DET from Nepal

6      Review your target requirements. Confirm acceptance and score requirements before buying.

7      Create an account. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID.

8      Complete payment. Check the final amount and payment confirmation.

9      Download the official desktop application. Use a supported computer and complete the system checks.

10   Take the free practice test. The official practice test takes about 45 minutes, uses the same general question types and adaptive experience, and provides an estimated score range.

11   Choose a quiet time. Allow about one uninterrupted hour and additional time for setup.

12   Complete the test and review. Follow every instruction, finish the writing and speaking samples, and wait for the result email.

13   Share the certified result. Send it through the official DET sharing process to the institutions that require it.

Equipment, ID, room setup, and test-day rules

You need a working computer with a camera, microphone, and speakers, plus a smartphone used as a secondary camera. Your internet connection should be stable enough for the full session.

For Nepal, the official accepted-identification table lists a passport for Nepal. Your government-issued ID must show your full legal name, date of birth, recent photo, country of issuance, and valid expiry date. Handwritten IDs, photocopies, digital images on a phone, and damaged or tampered documents are not accepted.

Prepare a private room where you are alone. Remove paper, notes, extra screens, headphones, earbuds, and unnecessary devices. Close other programs, browsers, messaging apps, remote-desktop tools, and software that provides predictive text or proofreading. The phone camera must capture your head, shoulders, computer screen, and keyboard. You may also need to complete room, computer-area, and ear scans; remove glasses and clip-on or magnetic earrings before the ear scan.

Do not look away from the screen except when typing, take notes, read from another source, interact with another person, or interfere with the phone camera. A rule violation can make a result unusable.

Practical preparation tips

Reading: Build speed with short academic texts. Practise identifying the main idea, choosing words by context, and completing sentences without overthinking one item.

Writing: Practise answering photo and interactive prompts with a clear structure: direct response, supporting detail, and a brief conclusion. Prioritise accurate grammar, specific vocabulary, and paragraph control over memorised phrases.

Listening: Use varied English accents and practise typing what you hear. Focus on keywords, numbers, transitions, and the difference between the main point and a supporting example.

Speaking: Record one-minute answers and review clarity, pacing, pronunciation, and whether you actually answer the prompt. Speak naturally instead of trying to sound overly formal.

Start with the free official practice test, review its estimated score range, and repeat it as part of a broader plan. Preparation should also include a complete equipment check and a rehearsal of the room and phone-camera setup.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is the DET fee for students in Nepal?

The current official price is USD 70 for one test. Your final card charge may vary because of exchange rates, bank charges, and taxes.

2. Can I take the DET from home in Nepal?

Yes. The DET is designed for online delivery from home, provided your computer, smartphone camera, room, ID, and internet connection meet the current rules.

3. How quickly will I receive my result?

Standard certified results are usually available within two days of completing the test. Faster Results may be available within 12 hours as an optional service.

4. How long is a DET score valid?

A certified DET result is valid for two years. After expiry, you can no longer share the result or view the certificate, and institutions lose access to the expired certificate.

5. What DET score do I need?

There is no single score for every student. Check the exact overall and subscore requirements for your course, institution, and intake.

6. Do all universities and visa authorities accept the DET?

No. Many institutions accept it, but policies vary by program and may change. University admission acceptance is not the same as satisfying visa or immigration English requirements. Verify both separately through official sources.
